For tenants in locations prone to sever storms, there are things you can do to help prepare yourself and your rental home.
- Know how to turn off water, power and gas.
- Have a plan in place for taking shelter. This should be the strongest room in the house.
- Prepare a pack of emergency essentials such as containers for drinking water and possibly fuel, masking tape for windows and necessary items for sand-bagging.
- Have relevant insurances up to date.
If severe weather warnings are issued:
- Disconnect electrical appliances.
- Secure outdoor furniture and garden items.
- Turn off electricity and gas.
- Fill buckets and baths with clean water.
- Close windows with shutters or crisscross strong tape.
- Close curtains.
- Park vehicles under cover and away from trees, powerlines and waterways. If necessary, Use firmly tied blankets or suchlike to help prevent hail damage.
- Move people and pets to the safest location.
- Keep your emergency kit close at hand.
- Stay tuned to local radio for updates.
If you have concerns about roofing, gutters, non-closing doors and windows, large trees and other such property matters, communicate your concerns to your property manager well before storm season begins.
